The Labour Party (LP) has strongly criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government, accusing it of failing to improve the lives of Nigerians after two years in power. Speaking during an interview in Abuja on Wednesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, stated that the APC administration has done virtually nothing to lift the country out of economic hardship. Instead, he said, the government has presided over rising inflation, unemployment, and poverty.
According to Ifoh, Nigerians are in the best position to judge whether their lives have improved under the current administration. He insisted that the Labour Party had foreseen the economic downturn and warned of the consequences before the 2023 general elections.
“Nigerians are now in a better position to appreciate what we said before the 2023 elections. We foresaw the hardship, poverty, and economic downturn being suffered today,” he said. “Ask any citizen if their lives have improved in the last two years — the answer is clear.”
Highlighting key economic indicators, Ifoh pointed to the dramatic devaluation of the Naira, rising fuel prices, and worsening inflation. He noted that the Naira, which once exchanged at N167 to the US Dollar, now trades at over N1,600. Similarly, petrol prices have soared from N87 per litre to more than N1,000.
“Is our purchasing power better than it was two years ago? Are we more secure at home or on our roads? These are the questions Nigerians must ask themselves,” he stated. “With inflation rising above 42% and food prices skyrocketing, the average Nigerian is worse off than before.”
Ifoh argued that the Labour Party would have taken a more people-centered approach to governance, prioritizing job creation, food security, and economic reforms aimed at improving the standard of living for all citizens.
“We make bold to say a Labour Party government would have done a better job of managing the economy and improving the lives of Nigerians,” he said.
The LP spokesperson also took aim at the government’s borrowing habits, accusing the APC administration of accumulating debt with little to show in terms of tangible development.
“It would be unfair to say the government did absolutely nothing in two years — what it has done is borrow more than any administration before it. But do Nigerians see value for that borrowed money?” Ifoh asked.
He further decried the rise in youth unemployment and criminal activity, which he said are symptoms of a failing economic system. The Labour Party maintained that its alternative policies, if implemented, would have reduced the suffering of ordinary Nigerians and set the country on a path of recovery.
Ifoh’s remarks come as the APC marks its second year in office following the 2023 presidential elections. Amid ongoing criticism over the state of the economy, security, and inflation, opposition voices like the Labour Party continue to challenge the ruling government’s performance.
