In a renewed push toward strengthening women’s representation across all levels of governance, Hon. (Princess) Olawumi Fayemi-Obayelu, a distinguished lawmaker in the Ondo State House of Assembly, has reiterated the need for the institutionalization of Special Seats for Women in Nigeria’s political structure.
Hon. Fayemi-Obayelu, who represents Ilaje Constituency II, serves as the Chairman, House Committee on Culture, Tourism, Investment and special duties. She also holds notable positions at the regional and national levels as an Associate Member of the ECOWAS Female Parliamentarians Association (ECOFEPA) and a National Executive Member of the Conference of Nigeria Female Parliamentarians (CONFEPA).
Her call was reinforced during an official meeting with the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, where discussions centered on the urgency of implementing structural mechanisms that guarantee increased participation of women in governance.
Advocating for Structural Inclusion, Hon. Fayemi-Obayelu emphasized that despite women’s proven capacity, Nigeria continues to fall short of global standards in gender-balanced political representation. She noted that creating special seats for women is not merely symbolic but a strategic step toward correcting long-standing institutional gaps.
According to her, “Nigeria cannot advance democratically without recognizing the essential role of women in shaping national policies. Special Seats will not only create space but also strengthen the quality of leadership in our political institutions.”
Commitment at the Regional and National Levels, through her engagements with ECOFEPA and CONFEPA, she has consistently championed policies that promote inclusiveness, empower young female politicians, and create pathways for women aspiring to leadership positions.
Her advocacy aligns with broader continental efforts aimed at advancing gender equality as enshrined in the ECOWAS Protocols, African Union declarations, and global commitments such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In her vision for a More Balanced Political Landscape, she affirmed her readiness to continue collaborating with federal legislators, civil society organizations, and international partners to support the bill to fruition. She commended the Deputy Speaker for his openness and longstanding support for gender-inclusive reforms.
